2010 Here We Come

This month marks a new year and a new decade, and The Leaven has hit the ground running. We anticipate a year of deepening growth, broadening expansion, and a powerful investment in the lives of children and families. We have set some goals for 2010, and we are excited to see them come to life.

In the coming weeks, through the generosity of the Harvest Society members’ sponsorship of children, we will expand our promotion of The Leaven with a gift for each student: a bright, bold t-shirt to declare their involvement in The Leaven. These students have so little hope in their daily lives, and certainly very few random presents, so the gifts of these t-shirts will represent their belonging, their worth, and the joy they bring to others. They can wear their t-shirts at school and as they travel around the community, to boldly tell others where they belong after school. We’re excited to share these t-shirts with the students, so they can excitedly invite their friends to share in the camaraderie of fitting in.

In the fall, The Leaven will host the Wine & Cheese Holiday Boutique. On October 17, 2010, we will invite you to enjoy fine wines, dine on exquisite cheeses, and get a head-start on your holiday shopping. The event will stretch through the afternoon, and the proceeds will deepen the benefits of The Leaven for many children and families.

Finally, as we roll into 2010, we eagerly hope to expand into the Phoenix Drive neighborhood. With overwhelming success in improving students’ academic success and lowering area crime rate, we are excited to provide mentoring, tutoring, and enrichment to another pocket in our community, where there are currently no programs for children. A generous donation from the Yarbrough Family Foundation has launched the campaign to enter the Phoenix Drive neighborhood, and there are many more opportunities to give. Ultimately, we seek to empower local at-risk youth to find success and stability in their own lives, and we need charitable help from many to achieve this reality this year.
